The World is Watching Qatar as the Middle Eastern country hosts the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Qatar has invested over $220 billion USD in preparing to host the world’s biggest sporting event and is using the world cup to boost the image and standing of Qatar on the global stage.
Another country who has used international events to bolster and improve their global standing is China who hosted both the 2008 and 2022 Olympic Games and the 2010 World Expo. China will no doubt make a bid for hosting the World Cup in the future but for now China is walking away as the big winners in Qatar this month.
China just signed a 27 year deal with Qatar to supply China for liquified natural gas (LNG) and this deal is HUGE for China’s future growth. Europe is struggling for natural gas amid the Russian sanctions and are in an extremely difficult position. Europeans have been forced to purchase natural gas from the United States, but the price is nearly 4 times more expensive than what they were paying before! It’s an absolute disaster for Europe but despite their need for energy, Europe has largely been reluctant to sign a long term deal with the Middle East.
This plays right into the hands of China as China makes national plans for decades in the future. China become the first country in the world to secure this deal with Qatar and their future in the Middle East looks especially bright. In addition, Xi Jinping arrives today in Saudi Arabia and will attend the first annual China-Arab Summit on December 9th.
What does China’s move in the middle east mean for the future of our world and global economy? I break it all down in this week’s important video.
