This week’s YouTube videos
1. China strong Olympic Performance
Many medals for China The Chinese Olympic team had a strong start at the Tokyo Olympics. Within the first 2 days, Chinese athletes won 6 gold medals. At the time of this publication Team China has won an impressive 40 medals, with nearly half of them (19) being Gold Medals.
US with most total medals Before this year's Olympics, the U.S. won a total of 1022 gold medals, which is more than the next two countries combined. The last time China won the most gold medals was in 2008, with 48 gold medals compared to 36 for the US. It should be close race again this year, as China's lead is slim. Projections show the U.S. winning the total number of medals, so we'll see!
Politicization of Sport While the international community celebrates and enjoys the Games, some media outlets see this as an opportunity to denounce China once again. CNN published an article titled "Nationalist sentiment rises as China off to strong start at Tokyo Olympics," criticizing various aspects of Chinese society. The article quickly reveals a moral double standard that is guided primarily by ideological motives.
2. Study shows negative attitude of Americans towards China
Introduction A recent article in the Foreign Affairs newspaper talks about the New Washington Consensus and about Americans perspective towards China. As the political confrontation is rising, the US perspective is more and more driven by fear and envy to contain China in every possible way, to contain the country’s momentum.
Study results A study from the Pew Research Center led through in last fall reports that an astonishing 73% of Americans are holding a negative view of China. This rise in Anti-Chinese sentiment comes at a time, where violence against the Asian ethnicity is on the rise, not only in the US but internationally, I recently published a video regarding Asian Hate crimes. But might this fear be based on mutual feelings? The article states, that in Chinese eyes, the most significant threat to China’s sovereignty has long been U.S. interference.
What is the solution? The author concludes that if the U.S. and China do not get their conflict under control, the world will be in trouble. This reflects very well my perspective, as I think cultural exchange and mutual understanding are key to a prosperous 21st century. I will soon be working on a HUGE project to deepen our understanding of Sino-American relations, can’t wait to share this with you all.
3. This week’s YouTube news
Zhengzhou Floods This Wednesday I posted a video about what happened in the Zhengzhou flood zone. I show the devastating impact, the unprecedented rainfall and I wanted to highlight what the government, various businesses, and the general public have done to alleviate the problem in this video. Thoughts and prayers go out to all the victims of this tragedy.
50 years of Sino-American relations - Success or Failure? Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established exactly 50 years ago. A lot has happened since then and China has become a player on the global and political world stage. I'm currently working on a video wondering whether the 50 years of relations have been a success or more of a failure. What is your opinion on this topic? Let me know in a comment!
